Artists Rep Presents No Man's Land

Artists-Rep-Presents-No-Mans-Land-104-116-20110915

Starting today, this production of No Man's Land is, surprisingly, not only a Portland premiere, but also the first play by Harold Pinter that Artists Repertory Theatre has ever produced. The tour-de-force lead roles will feature Producing Artistic Director Allen Nause as Hirst and the Oscar Award-winning film and stage actor William Hurt as Spooner. This is Hurt's fourth production with Artists Rep and his third time on stage with Nause in recent years. Joining them is one of Portland theatre's favorites Tim True and Hurt's son, Alex Hurt, a recent Masters graduate of NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. No Man's Land is directed by the world-reputed John Dillon

In this masterpiece of deceit and wit, a mysterious stranger visits the house of a famous English poet and the two men verbally grapple and spar in a limbo of circuitous logic, recovering and reconciling their memories of days gone by. With the aid of a good deal of vodka, loads of whiskey and a little champagne, the two of them unearth their successes, adventures, and women won and lost. A poignant comedy steeped in ambiguity, Pinter's No Man's Land plumbs the space between what is known and what is imagined.

The production will be featured in Artists Rep's most intimate theatre, the Morrison Stage, which holds just 168 seats. Ticket prices are listed on the website. There will be no "rush" tickets for this show. All discounts, vouchers or special offer tickets must be used within the first two weeks of the run (Oct 16).

He's worked at over two dozen of the country's leading regional theaters, including Atlanta's ALLIANCE THEATRE Company, Actors Theatre of Louisville, the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, Syracuse Stage, Georgia Shakespeare, Chapel Hill's PlayMakers Rep, the Missouri Rep, D.C.'s Arena Stage, Chicago's Goodman Theatre, New Haven's Long Wharf, Seattle's ACT Theatre, the Seattle Children's Theatre, the Berkeley Rep and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival (where his staging of WIT won him a BackstageWest Garland Award).

Although he makes his home in Seattle, John is also the Associate Director of Tokyo's Institute of Dramatic Arts (and where his productions have twice won Japan's highest theater award). He's the Founding President of Theatre Puget Sound, a service organization for theaters and theater workers in the Seattle area. From 1977 to 1993 he was the Artistic Director of the Milwaukee Repertory Theater and during his time there launched a number of innovative exchanges with theater companies in Mexico, Russia, Ireland, Chile, Japan and England. From 2004 to 2010 he served as the director of the theatre program at Sarah Lawrence College and he currently serves as an Artist-in-Residence at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Dillon is a fellow in the College of Fellows of the American Theatre and a member of The National Theatre Conference. He is a Danforth and Woodrow Wilson fellow with graduate degrees in theater from Columbia and Northwestern Universities.

Artists Repertory Theatre
No Man's Land is supported by the law firm of Larkins Vacura LLP and Individual Producer Joseph T. Leimert, MD. The 2011/12 Artists Repertory Theatre season is presented by the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation. The 2011 print media sponsor is The Oregonian, the season radio sponsor is KINK.FM. Season hotel sponsors are Mark Spencer Hotel and Hotel deLuxe. Other support comes from All Classical, Oregon Arts Commission, the Regional Arts & Culture Council, Work for Art and Maletis Beverage. Now entering its 29th season, Artists Repertory Theatre is the longest-running professional theater company in Portland. Artists Rep strives to challenge artists and audiences with plays of depth and vibrancy in an intimate setting. Artists Rep explores the strengths, frailties, and diversity of the human condition primarily through regional premieres, commissioned works and selected classics appropriate to contemporary issues.
